On Getting Older

They say one is not old until regrets take the place of dreams. I hope this is true. I have a lot left in me. I’ve been around for 36 years now, and I’ve come to believe deeply in the following:

My back now aches — be kind to your back in your 20s — it might be kind to you in your 30s and 40s.

Although I am far from obtaining it, I now understand what wisdom is. I will continue to seek it until I die.

Retirement is not a thing for me. Instead, my sole focus is the freedom to do what I love.

I consciously work to notice the present moment and enjoy the bliss of being alive. There is so much beauty and pleasure in the Now. Getting to the Now is the tricky part. One strategy that sometimes works for me is to observe my inner chatter, without judgment — Now is all there is.

Take time before replying. Emotions cloud judgment and decrease peripheral vision.

Set big goals but achieve them with small commitments. Remember to recognize small victories along the way.

Leverage pattern recognition, but question everything from first principles. Question assumptions often. Don’t become a slave to your own dogma.

Reserve time to complete your work calmly. A scattered mind is a sick mind. Spend time deciding what is important. Throw away the rest. Never be too busy to pay attention to.

Expectations dictate your happiness state. Don’t expect much from others; let them delight you. Everyone is facing a battle; you know nothing about; assume positive intent.

Happiness is result reliant; joy is a state of being.

Monotony collapses time; novelty unfolds it. Travel is a novelty. Seek the ephemeral goosebumps of life daily.

Separate matters into two camps, what you can control, and what you can’t control. Ignore the latter.

Examine situations from various points of view. We all have at least one gigantic blind spot called Ego.

When facing a difficult situation, visualize what having persevered would feel like, internalize that feeling now.

Memento mori. Steve Jobs said it best: “Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life.”

Never, ever, let the light from a child’s eyes become dark. That light powers the universe in more ways than we could ever understand.
