If you care about this earth, help us abolish IE6

Posted on August 05, 2008 at 09:31 PM

Most of us often pull our hair out and cry uncontrollably when it comes to dealing with Internet Explorer 6. I have no doubt that it will eventually go away but in the meantime we each need to contribute to help speed up the process.

I am not sure why people still use such junk, if by not knowing better, we, the web developers must educate them. If they haven’t yet upgraded to Internet Explorer 7 because their copy of windows isn’t Genuine; Microsoft please give them a break, or better yet, go download Firefox and tell me it doesn’t kick some serious ass.

Web developers, if you can please either A. Stop supporting IE6 or B. Include a little friendly note at the top of ALL pages on your site letting the unfortunate user know that his experience will suck and that his personal information is unsafe on the web.

Here is a quick template I used in the past:

Feel free to make it < blink>, IE users probably love that :-)

  1. You need a comment on here, because it is too important of a topic for there not to be a comment.

  2. If you don’t ban people from your site that use IE6 there are definitely alternatives.

  3. A. Annoying header or footer that follows the user while navigating the page, telling them to upgrade.

  4. B. A friendly reminder to upgrade that fits with the site.

  5. C. For big clients who are tech savvy, ask if you can put a warning on their site to tell people to upgrade their browser or switch to a better browser.

  6. D. Charge people extra money to make sites that support IE6. Don’t be afraid to charge a decent amount too. If they want it, they will pay for it.

  7. These people need to switch for many reasons. Mostly that the browser is out dated, and they are only holding back technology that could otherwise be flourishing if people updated their browser ASAP. Secondly, SECURITY! They are putting themselves in harm’s way by using IE6.

Lastly, the excuses are endless, and it comes down to people being lazy, even if it does involve the IT department, and they have IE6 dependent technology they use, they can still allow Firefox as well.

Anti Explorer is a small piece of code you can place in your site’s HTML which stops Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE / Explorer) from rendering your page. Along-side this, a notification alerts the user he / she is using MSIE and prompts him / her to download Firefox instead.

We’ve all been there. We design our site with Internet Explorer in mind, only to find we have to resort to numerous hacks and complicated code to get our site looking like it should in MSIE. Numerous Web Citizens have written hacks and workarounds for MSIE, only to be dismayed at all the extra effort they had to put in to get their designs cross-compatible with MSIE.

We feel you… one of our developers wrote a song called “IE is being mean to me” and you can find the video here:

Hope you like it.
